If you are looking for Vanuatu activities, one that is a must try is Scuba Diving. Many of us dream of scuba diving on their exotic holidays, but are worried that if they learn how to dive, they may finish up wasting a large amount of their holiday cash and time on one activity. The reality is, there are diving courses and faculties all around the world, and it’s feasible to start your learn how to dive course in your local country and to complete it whilst you are on your holiday. Or better yet, you can complete the small amount of theory required to learn how to dive before you start on holiday and earn a diving certification that may allow you to scuba dive anywhere on the planet whilst on holidays. So before you start on holiday, look into your options thoroughly if you would like to be taught how to dive. When you learn how to dive, you’ll be taught basic mechanics in a pool.

This might appear simplistic, but even the best swimmers need to learn special systems for movement when they learn how to dive, since mechanics are not the same as those used with steady swimming, particularly since divers have kit to cope with too. The introductory course or discover scuba also teaches the potential diver equipment use and preparation.

This is the most intimidating aspect for people that desire to be taught how to dive, but after you get to understand ways to correctly handle your dive equipment, you can start to dive confidently. Naturally, safety is a vital part of your course as you learn how to dive, and the buddy system is necessary, even for seasoned divers.
Other skills taught in beginning and intermediate courses include some school room as well as pool work, and Openwater dive training.

You may learn how to dive thru manuals and videos, not just underwater, but lots of these materials can be studied at home to maximize the quantity of time students spend in the water. A lot of dive operations also offer online learning.

Most places have a minimum age, but this is rather young, usually around 10 to 12. For those that have medical conditions eg, diabetes or asthma, you normally wouldn’t be permitted to dive unless a doctor approves the course for the patient. Some faculties will require you to take a medical examination, and others will permit anybody to begin the course if they appear to be in good general health or answer no to all the questions on a fairly detailed medical questionnaire. Many scuba dive faculties offer refresher courses and a lot offer them free of charge. Anyone that wants to resume diving as a pastime should take a refresher course if they haven’t had a dive for a year or two. Diving certifications issued by some accreditation companies don’t expire so if you can’t find your dive certification card a lot of operations can look up old certifications online for you.

Some students who learn how to dive will go on and continue and take more sophisticated courses, for example Openwater and Advanced Openwater or on to Dive Master or Instructor. Some will need to give up their lifeless nine to five grind and become full time scuba diving instructors. It’s a great job for those that like to be in the water and to go to exotic locations. However, given the safety points to consider, certification for scuba dive instructors requires quite a lot of experience and study and many would rather simply learn how to dive for pleasure than to contemplate a job in scuba diving.

Whether you need to learn to dive, take a refresher course or take your training to the next level there is a dive facility not to far from you or most certainly available at your next holiday destination if it is close to water.

Nautilus Watersports offers diving every day. They specialize in Introductory Courses through to Instructor. They run a FREE pool session for beginners each afternoon and they are able to get you certified as a Padi Open Water Diver in about 3 days part time.
They run courses every day and are Vanuatu’s only 5 Star Instructor Training Facility. Watch our Introductory Dive video and book your pool session by going to http://divingvanuatu.net/padi-course-information/

A deep water tsunami can travel at the speed of a jumbo jet and can strike with devastating force. Caused by underwater earthquakes, these massive waves can crush brick walls with ease and toss around 18 wheelers like they were plastic toys in the hands of a rambunctious child.

Although modern technology has allowed geologists to detect and give fair warning for most tsunamis which are far from shore, if they strike close enough or threaten an area without adequate communication, the residents may not escape in time and thousands of lives may be lost.

This is why geologists recommend playing it safe and seeking higher ground if you feel a large earthquake and live in a danger zone.

As seismologist Kevin McCue told CTV’s Canada AM:

“It’s one of the golden rules, I think. If you’ve felt a strong earthquake and it lasts more than about 30 seconds, then you should high-tail it for high land, at least 10 to 20 metres above high-water mark,”

But what about the stock market? Can the same be said? If a natural disaster like a tsunami hits, should you “run for the hills” and get into cash?

What effects do tsunamis and other disasters have on the market?

Many people seem to think the effect is negative. For example, an author writing for The Street, has stated that the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan were instrumental in causing a significant plunge in both Asian and European stocks.

And from the Economic Times we learn that: “World markets went into a tailspin today as tremors from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan shook investors’ sentiment”.

But, what do the facts say? Do tsunamis really cause the market to plunge?

To determine the impact I used a search engine to find 10 historically significant tsunamis which have occurred over the last 60 years.

I then correlated their dates the Dow Jones 30 and noted the index price before the tsunami struck and subtracted from it the price the day after the tsunami. I did the same for the price 10 days out and 30 days out. I chose the closest day for those which occurred when the markets weren’t in session.

The facts spoke for themselves:

According to the data, tsunamis don’t seem to have much impact on the markets. The relatively minuscule effect they did have was quite the reverse from expectations.

Initially the market did seem to turn down slightly. Looking at ten major tsunamis, I found the percentage decline to be -0.14. But this can isn’t really significant given that the standard deviation (STD) for the day-to-day changes (in percentage terms) is a little over 1. In short the normal variability could handily explain the slight deviation from zero.

Statistically speaking we can’t say there is any effect.

At a ten day interval, we do see a more impressive difference at a positive 0.58 percent. Obviously this has strayed somewhat farther from zero. But unfortunately at this distance from the pre-tsunami day, the STD for the percentage changes has increased as well, all the way up to 3.16.

So again for the 0.58 percent increase we see after 10 days we are well within normal variability and we just can’t draw any conclusion.

Nor can we conclude anything statistically for the 30 day interval.

To summarize, the small drop in the Dow 30 comparing the day before to the day after the tsunami,as well as the moderate uptick after 10 days, and the 0.68 percent increase after 30 days were simply not significant from a mathematical point of view.

Though it would be exciting (and might seem logical) to conclude that tsunamis cause big changes in the stock market similar to their tremendous destructive power on the coast, but statistically this isn’t the case.

Tsunamis seem to be among a class of phenomena that are very significant to humans in terms of their physical force but simply don’t have an analogous effect on the stock market.

When you hear an “expert” on CNN or Fox claiming that a tsunami has caused the stock market to take a nose dive, take a moment to question whether there is any hard data to back up that claim.

Doing so will help you keep your eyes on your intended financial strategy and not be distracted by events which have no discernible impact on your financial future.

Scuba diving is preferred, scuba diving is straightforward and scuba diving is entertaining. Scuba diving as out of doors recreation is gaining in reputation, whilst participation in other pastimes is diminishing. Why is scuba diving so well-known?

Above seventy% in the soil’s surface is lined with mineral water. The allure and thriller from the underwater planet has inspired the individual’s creativeness since prehistory, in the mythological monsters described by seafaring people, towards the technology fiction of Jules Verne and also the modern day underwater adventures in Hollywood films. Breath-maintain diving, risky although it can be, has become used to collect pearls, sponges and priceless commodities in the sea ground for a lot of generations.

Advances in underwater exploration began nearly three centuries in the past making use of diving bells and significant cumbersome sealed fits by using pumped air from the floor. Only incredibly recently advances in engineering and mechanics have allowed men and women to take a look at this area safely for exploration utilizing comfortable, self-contained air delivery systems.

Although air-assisted underwater exploration may be around since the 1700′s, underwater exploration was out of achieve towards the regular man or woman, and recreational scuba diving was an unthinkable luxury. Good advances within the engineering of valves and compressed air tanks within the 1930′s created the first methods that we would contact “scuba”: the Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. These early scuba tanks ended up clunky, inefficient methods that spouted air continually into the diver’s confront. Involving 1942 and 1946, Jacques-Yves Cousteau (a French naval lieutenant) and Emile Gagnan (an engineer) developed the Aqua Lung; a machine which used strain valves to provide adequately pressurized air only if the diver breathed in. Above the next two decades experimental dives while using Aqua Lung proved its reliability and inside the 1960′s “sport diving” was born.

NAUI, the National Association of Underwater Instructors, was formed in 1960 to regulate and instruct risk-free scuba diving to enthusiasts of this new sport. PADI, the Skilled Association of Diving Instructors, was formed in 1967.

From the 1970′s, scuba products continued to evolve and also the typical scuba process was enhanced by buoyancy compensation vests, much better valves and submersible stress gauges. As a result of the 1980′s and 1990′s, scuba as a recreational sport became a multi-billion greenback industry with its reputation prompting a lot more innovation inside design and also the engineering of better, safer, lighter, more at ease devices.

These days, scuba diving is accessible to practically anyone with only a modest funding in products. Anywhere you need to dive you’ll be able to generally locate a dive store close to-at-hand to rent tanks, go on the guided dive with a grasp diver, require a chartered boat or just strap about the tanks and swim out from the shore.

Usually, people who live near the beach are very loves to do some beach activities in their everyday life. This is because a beach can give so many advantages for us, especially that they usually give an adventure of many people in the world. A beach is very useful for giving some fun to the people, but they usually gives so many disadvantages because it is related with the nature. That is why many people believes that there are so many way to makes the beach activity safer, with choose some ways for the sea safety.

A sea safety is very important because people who loves to do some beach activities are usually needs the safety because every people needs to take a high risks when they are doing some beach activities. That is why there are so many beaches that hire a beach security to keep the people safety.

As a diver peering off the side of reef or down into the depths of a beautiful wreck, it is hard not to get lured beyond the 60 feet your Open Water Certification qualifies you for. Open Water Diver gives you the training wheels you need to start your diving in a safe and enjoyable manner. However, it won’t take long before deeper diving calls to you. Getting the advanced level training you need to safely execute recreational dives to 130 feet (40m) is an essential part of your diving journey. A great diver is always learning!

In the PADI and SDI training system (taught by the Academy of Scuba): As an open water diver, your training qualifies you to dive to 60 feet, with a buddy, without exceeding your NDLs. As you move on to Advanced Diver, your training qualifies you to dive to 100 feet, with a buddy, without exceeding your NDLs. Lastly as a PADI Diver, when you take the deep diver specialty, your training qualifies you to dive to 130 feet, with a buddy, without exceeding your NDLs.

Back in the “old” days, qualification used to mean, you could dive as deep as you could CESA from.

I mentioned PADI and SDI for a reason.

They require a deep diving specialty to qualify you for 130 feet. However, there are agencies, like NAUI (also taught at the Academy of Scuba), that integrate that into the Advanced Diver stage versus the specialty. I am not say NAUI is better than PADI or Vice Versa, but there are some nuances and differences … You need to do your due diligence and pick an educational path that is right for you!

Now, keeping this away from an agency versus agency debate. I think training is essential at the deep diver level. To truly execute a safe deep dive, you need to have the proper tools. You need to understand redundancy, fail safe procedures, true buddy system protocols, deep safety stops, equipment configuration variances, SAC rate and Gas Management, advanced dive planning, emergency procedures, rescues and assists, the panic cycle and more.

Problem solving and basic survival skills (like Alt Air Ascent taught in the OW class) take on a whole new host of challenges and opportunities to learn. Also, when you take your Deep Diver Specialty at the Academy of Scuba, we go much more in depth about decompression theory and narcosis management (even at the recreational level), so you truly understand what is happening to your body as you dive at these depths. The recreational deep diving specialty is a great precursor for the SDI Solo Diver Course, the NAUI Master Diver Course, and Professional course like Divemaster and even Technical Courses like Advanced Nitrox or Deco Procedures.

If you are a new diver, some of these courses may be a little far off into the future, but it is fun and informative to start researching them now. It kind of gives you a goal to strive for. Of course, training is essential to progress your diving. You will notice, throughout my discussion, I used the term “qualification” and never mentioned the word certification. There is a difference. Many divers go through the motions, complete the course (usually in a group setting) and are issued a card. That is my definition of certification. In many cases, they will never practice those skills again (unless called on by some situation). You wouldn’t believe how many divers have never done their basic OW skills since their training dives. Back to the subject: most skills learned in a class are stored in short term memory and there is usually not enough practice to develop any long term muscle memory. So, certification is what certification is … enough said.

Qualification is a bit different. This means you have acquired skills in a certification course. You have been given time to practice on your own and under a professional instructor or Divemaster. You have repeatedly done the skills in shallow water, mid water and at depth. (Can you truly be certified to dive to 130 feet if you have never done an alt air ascent from 130 feet?). Then you have put together a workout regiment to periodically practice and refresh these skills (keep them from rusting). That is qualified. Without the practice element, you cannot say you are truly qualified … merely certified. And, with all the lakes, rivers, or even swimming pools in our backyards, we really have no excuse not to practice. These are all great training grounds.

When you are ready to take these skills to the next level, do them neutrally buoyant or in a blacked out mask. Make sure you have the proper supervision before doing this and ALWAYS stay within your training limits … of course. That is qualified.

A lot of people just jump in the water, run down a line to 130 feet, blow some bubbles and come back up. “Certification card please?” Thankfully, they are usually safe. In my mind, this is a “bet on black or red” gamble. The more prepared you are, the more educated you are and the more your skills are refreshed, the more you are playing with the house odds (pardon the gambling analogy, I am jonesing for Vegas). Most of all, listen to your peers. They know their way around these waters.

At 100 dives, I thought I knew everything. At 1000 dives, I knew I had a lot more to learn. Still learning today!!!! A great diver is always learning. Great mentors are always diving!

Scuba diving is as exciting as it sounds and ranks among one of the most always-wanted-to-do hobbies. It gives you a unique experience of a world that many others will not dare to explore. Scuba Diving is most popular in resorts and sea-sides where the water is very clear. Mexico, Thailand, and the Bahamas are some places which are among the top diving destinations of the world where one can learn to scuba dive.

Scuba diving requires certification. To learn to scuba dive involves both theoretical and practical lessons. If you planning the scuba lessons over a vacation, it makes more sense to finish the theory beforehand and keep maximum vacation time for the practical lessons. There are institutions that offer lessons for a semester and there are sporting associations and stores that offer classes for a few weeks. Sometimes there is also an extra equipment rental fee.

Most importantly, to learn to scuba dive, one needs to know how to swim in the deeper waters.

Scuba divers-to-be are also taught all aspects of safety. They instructor will educate the student about the scuba equipment, water conditions and some sign language as well. The scuba equipment consists of the buoyancy compensator or the vest that can be inflated and deflated, the regulator or the hoses that connect the vest, and the air tank, the tank, mask, fins, boots, etc. Prior to getting into the water one has to make sure that the vest is filled with air and he/she is breathing through the regulator. The mask should be worn on the face as well. The regulator comes with air, depth, and time gauges.

Choose a diving school and instructor of repute. Make sure the instructor is adequately qualified and experienced.

It is recommended to always scuba dive with a buddy. Buddies who dive together stay together under the water and check each other’s gear from time to time. There is always an extra tube called the octopus from one’s regulator for the buddy to take his breath from, in case his stops working.

Once in the water the diving is done in stages and very gradually to help the body adjust to the pressure. There could be pain in the ears and teeth. Nowadays, scuba diving equipment is computerized and clearly tells how slowly one needs to decompress. An experienced scuba diver can opt for standard and quality equipment that goes a long way in keeping the diver safe underwater. Learning to scuba dive can be one of the most enjoyable experiences ever.

Bali is a great place not just for holiday but also for snorkeling and scuba diving. You can dive in the vicinity of Sanur and in Nusa Dua, but the most exiting scuba-diving locations are in more remote places. Pulau Menjangan in the west is a favorite, as are Candidasa, Padangbai, Tulamben, and Amed in the east. Other spots are Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.

Menjangan Island
The most beautiful unspoiled coral reefs in Bali are off the coast of Pulau Menjangan (“Deer island”). Comprising hundreds of species of coral, these reefs extend 100 to 150m from the shore then drop 40 to 60 m down to ocean floor. Menjangan Island and the nearby mainland are excellent places for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving.

Candidasa
Candi Dasa is a new but rapidly growing beach resort located on the black sand coast of Karangasem Regency. It is the perfect base for explorations of the area, as well as a quieter alternative to the southern tourist centers.

Padang Bai
Padang Bai is a major harbor for ships to Lombok and points east, as well as for smaller boats to Nusa Penida.

Padangbai hides great coves and dive spots behind its hills. Just north of Padangbai is the Blue Lagoon, a treasure-trove of marine life. 2 islands (Tepekong and Mimpang) outside the bay, and Biaha a little to the north, offer some of the most breath-taking diving in Bali. However, due to conditions, these 3 sites need to be treated with care and respect. The currents coming from the Lombok Strait create unpredictable water movements that can result in a washing machine effect.

Tulamben
Tulamben is a quiet village on the northeast coast of Bali, facing the Lombok Strait. Divers occasionally meet mola-mola sunfish, hammerhead sharks and whale sharks in the waters off Tulamben. Its biodiversity and location make Tulamben one of the best dive sites in the world. Complete with its own wreck, the USS Liberty, which sank in 1963 when Gunung Agung erupted, the easy access to this wreck adds to the village’s charm.

Amed
Amed reef, this small coral reef lies in depths ranging from 12-22M. In this area you will find many different kinds of sponges and gorgonians and the marinelife includes everything from gobies and shrimp as well as anemones with attendant clownfish to schools of barracuda and Blue Spotted Ray. Many different kinds of parrotfish, angelfish, surgeonfish and moray eel.

Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan
Nusa Lembongan, a small island between Bali and Nusa Penida in the Badung Strait, is the perfect location for a dive trip like no other. With seasonal migrations of the Mola Mola and all year round sightings of Manta rays, this is an exceptional location to see prolific marine life.
